Know your NHS this bank holiday weekend

The final bank holiday of the summer is this weekend, so it’s important to know what your options are if you need health advice.

A great place to start is your local pharmacy. A number of pharmacies are open over the bank holiday weekend, and they are a place where you can get quick, confidential advice on common illnesses, as well as over-the-counter medication.

Self-care is often the best method for many common illnesses and injuries, so make sure that you stock up on any medicines that you might need. Remember that your nearest pharmacy may be shut, and you won’t be able to book a GP appointment, so any prescription medicines will need to be collected as soon as possible.

Dr Richard Mendelsohn, Chief Medical Officer at NHS Birmingham and Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It’s very important that people choose the right service over the August Bank Holidays. There are many conditions that can be easily treated at home or with advice from your local pharmacist.

“For healthcare needs that are not urgent, we would ask people to call the NHS 111 service and speak to a trained advisor. It’s a free telephone number available 24 hours a day and you will be directed to the right local service.”

“Patients can also contact their GP surgery’s out-of-hours service, or visit a local walk-in centre.”
