Lord Mayor's Giving Day

300119GIVING 76Tony Kelly, a patient representative member of the NHS Birmingham and Solihull CCG's Diabetes Prevention Programme Board and also a Clinical Champion with Diabetes UK, and Philomena Gales, the CCG's Senior Integration Manager: Long Term Conditions (Diabetes and Respiratory) recently attended the Lord Mayor’s Giving Day 2019 launch event.

The event, at the Edgbaston Park Hotel in Birmingham,  brought together the great and the good from industry and charitable organisations through a philanthropic approach and agreement to work together for the good of our local communities. The Lord Mayor invited business leaders to talk with representatives from charitable organisations to understand what support they need and how best that need can be met.

Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Birmingham, Professor Sir David Eastwood welcomed everyone to the event. He shared some interesting stories of local philanthropists that we are all familiar with including the Cadbury family who are synonymous not just with chocolate, but with social reform and Joseph Chamberlain, the first Chancellor of the University, businessman, social reformer, politician, and previous Lord Mayor of Birmingham.

Baroness Fritchie, who has spent her life challenging convention and championing diversity talked about a local female philanthropist Louisa Ryland, who has a building named after her – the Grade II-listed Louisa Ryland House, in Newhall Street. Her donations included several large areas of land that were used to create public parks, including Small Heath and Canon Hill parks.

The Lord Mayor’s event focussed on ‘giving’ – and it was clear that this does not always mean money. It could be giving time to support the organisations with mentorship and leadership skills, understanding HR processes or IT skills. It could be about volunteering, raising money through cake sales, sponsored events, etc. The message was that we could all give something back for the greater good of our communities. So, if you are feeling inspired to give something yourself, look out for the Community Giving Weekend 29-30 June 2019.
